Breeding - laboratory - production. We are a Saxon company with partners all over the world.
The breeding department works on various ornamental plants. Strong, uniform and persistent varieties, which are just as convincing in the production plant as in the sales and finally over a long period of time with the customer, are our goal.
In the diagnostic laboratory pac® Biotec we test our own material and also cultures on customer order for diseases. Furthermore, we test irrigation water samples for pathogen contamination and run nutrient analyses of substrate and soil samples. In the tissue culture laboratory, plants are treated, kept in depots and propagated in vitro as required.
We supply healthy cuttings worldwide from our mother plant locations in Kenya and Portugal.
In the production nursery in Thiendorf with a total of 6.5 hectares of high glass area, young plants and semi-finished products grow as the starting material for your culture success.
Sunny locations for our mother plants
Even the quality of the ready-to-sell plants is decisively influenced by the good quality of the mother plants and the fast transport of the cuttings. At our two mother plant locations in Kenya at Lake Naivasha and Portugal in Montijo, we do everything we can to optimise the production of cuttings.
Kentalya has the right climate for Pelargonium, Cleome, Dianthus, Isotoma and New Guinea Impatiens, among others. In summer, the mother plants of our Poinsettia assortment are also grown at this location.
The Portuguese company supplies cuttings of Calibrachoa and Petunia, among others. The certified organic mother plants for the herbs also grow at this location.
The starting material for all mother plants comes from certified laboratories.
The workshop for reliable beauties
We have been passionate about breeding bedding and balcony plants since around 1925, when Wilhelm Elsner II recognised the importance of varietal differences due to increased sales and larger sets. Of course we work on special colours and shapes, but excellent production characteristics are our most important approach. Robust varieties with very good rooting and branching and an early flowering time save effort in production and ensure sales. We are just as rigorous in checking the characteristics in the trade, right through to summer ripening - only the tough ones make it into the garden!
Get off to a healthy start with our labs
In our in vitro laboratory, we do everything we can to ensure a clean start to production! Healthy starting material for mother plants is grown here, and we also offer propagation as a service to provide larger quantities of in vitro plants. By testing plants, soil and water, our diagnostic laboratory offers a service for safe production.
Our production nursery
In our modern nursery, we produce young plants from a wide variety of bedding and balcony plants, potted plants, herbs and various hardy plants as well as ground cover plants. From here, we supply you all year round with product forms customised to your needs.
FAQ
Where can I meet the pac team in person?
Our colleagues look forward to meeting you at the Flower Trials and are there for you at the Open Days of the German Trial Stations for Horticulture.
However, we would particularly like to invite you to visit our customer days, which take place every year for one week in our nursery in Thiendorf, starting on the Monday after the Flower Trials. Our show garden is open to the professional public from mid-June to the end of September.

Would you like to learn more about our assortment?
We supply young plants of various vegetative propagated genera and varieties of Geranium, bedding and balcony plants, structural plants, ground cover plants, herbs and Poinsettias. We would be happy to advise you on the genera that interest you and help you select suitable varieties. Please feel free to contact us.
Do you have any questions about the production tour?
Here, we have provided production advice for the various plant genera. These can only serve as recommendations, as conditions differ greatly between nurseries. Please also check with the relevant authority regarding the approval of any plant protection or plant strengthening products you use.
In what product types do we deliver?
Our range is available as unrooted cuttings, young plants in various pot sizes, or potted semi-finished products. More detailed information on product forms and packaging units can be found here and with the respective product.
Where do the unrooted cuttings come from?
Our cuttings are produced in our own stock plant nurseries in Portugal and Kenya and shipped from there by truck or plane worldwide. Pictures and information about the nurseries can be found here.
Can I book a visit to the trial garden at Elsner pac?
Every year, interesting new varieties are tested on our trial field and compared with current varieties. Flowering, health, and resistance to heat and rain are evaluated and taken into account when deciding on varieties. The test field is also open to visitors between July 1 and the end of September. Please register in advance!
